Traveling in Comfort
I’ve traveled a lot over the last six months. Some of it for work, and some of it for pleasure. Although I make the most of all my travels, it can be a little tough on your skin, your body, and your health. Not too long ago, I had the privelege of being interviewed by Forbes contributor, Margaux Lushing, on “how I keep [my] skin glowing while traveling” . I will make a small amendment to that article, though. The author accidentally cited Melt Cosmetics but I actually said I like the eye patches from Milk Makeup.
But there is so much more to travel than looking good when you arrive (although that’s a BIG bonus!)
Luggage
You need something light (so you can have the liberty to pack as much as you want without dreaded overweight bag fees or being unable to lift it into the overhead bin). If you check your bag, you need something that will actually stand up to being slung around and abused going in and out of the plane and back onto the conveyor belt. I had been eyeing Away luggage for awhile, and after going through two different hard shell suitcases within one year, I decided to pull the trigger. The fact that it has a warranty “forever” is what got me. And they had a 100 day trial. I figured out I was going to at least 10 different destinations in 100 days so it was worth it to try. I haven’t looked back. The color is great. The wheels really glide over any type of terrain. I’ve never had a problem with the telescoping handle, and I appreciate the included laundry bag. Although somewhat pricy for a suitcase, It’s cheaper than a lot of other brands and at the rate I was going buying a new one every 6 months on average, the warranty will save me a lot of time and money in the long run. Want $20 off? You’re in luck! Get yours here.
An Organized Carry-On
Sure a ziploc baggie will do to for TSA’s 3-1-1 rule—but if you travel a lot, you replace that ratty ziploc a lot. Reduce waste, and keep everything tidy with these cute bags from Truffle. Although it’s a plus for me that this is TSA-compliant, I actually have a bunch of these and use them all the time to keep my purse organized. I like that you can see what’s inside. And if something spills/leaks, they’re easy to wipe clean. They come in a variety of sizes but this one specifically is TSA approved.
Comfortable Shoes
You want shoes that you can sprint from one gate to the next in if necessary—even if that doesn’t happen, you’re going to do your fair share of walking. I bought a pair of slip-ons from Greats . They’re comfortable, easy to get on/off going through security (if you don’t have pre-check) and they are easy to dress up or down, minimizing the number of pairs of shoes you have to pack. Unfortunately the pair in my picture has since sold out but there are tons of other cute options available and their mission toward zero footprint is pretty great.
Compression Socks
No seriously. I’m only 32, but I said it. Compression socks. Especially if you’re on a long flight. I actually like to wear these during or after any long day where I’ve spent hours on my feet. They help keep the circulation going which can be a challenge when you’re crammed into an itty bitty seat. Plus, Comrad socks are actually cute. Also— again, if you don’t have pre-check—-the worst is realizing that you didn’t wear socks and having to go through the process completely barefoot. Ew. Gross.
Comfy Clothes
I just found out about this brand from J.Lo called Yiama Sol. The leggings are all suuuuuuuper buttery soft. (seriously, my husband won’t stop making excuses to touch my bum when I’m wearing them—-like even more so than usual) They’re in really fun bright colors/patterns and—-surprisingly (because of how soft they are) are made out of 84% recycled plastic. I found them luxuriously soft and breathable. I also always recommend wearing layers, and making one of them a big comfy sweater or sweatshirt. Planes always seem to be refrigerators or the Sahara to me and never anything in between. Bonus points if you have pockets to stash your passport/ID, boarding pass, and phone! I have several options I like to rotate among depending on the climate in the city I’m departing/traveling to.
The Right Fuel
I mentioned my matcha addiction, right? I like to carry these single serving matcha+collagen packets from Vital Proteins. It tastes perfect with just hot water. (It’s wayyy cheaper to buy the tub to use at home, but the packets are so convenient for this purpose.) I also like to bring my own sliced apple and those individual serving packets of Justin’s Maple Almond Butter, Tone It Up Protein Bars or Bites, and Babybel Light Cheese. Nothing is worse than being hangry and not being able to find something healthful or inexpensive nearby. If I have the opportunity to eat somewhere awesome pre-flight, I’ll sometimes order extra food to-go so I can take it on my flight with me. If I haven’t thought ahead, Starbucks usually has those handy Protein Boxes or sous vide egg bites, and I’ve seen a lot more places offering things like fruit, portable cheese, and other nutritious snacks—but you’ll pay a premium for it.
